“Mark Twain was not quite 50 when he published “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” in February 1885, and in so doing, he changed American literature (Ulin).” This book is a first person account of an outsider’s view of America. Jim is a human being and doesn’t deserve to be someone’s property. However, after spending time with Jim on the river, Huck realizes that he needs to help Jim because it is the right thing to do. He doesn’t seem to be too concerned with the morality of slavery. In the beginning of the novel, Huck in only concerned with his own freedom. Huck wants to break free of the constraints of society while Jim is literally trying to break free from slavery. Huck Finn tells the story of two characters who are attempting to become free. Each character had a unique voice which was different from most other novels of that time. Twain’s dialogue made his characters sound like real people. Twain’s use of slang and accents helps to bring his characters to life. Twain uses humor and satire to illustrate his themes of justice and morality. The novel is filled with descriptions of the river and the different people who frequented the towns along the river’s edge. The book tells the story of a boy named Huck who helps Jim, a runaway slave, to find his freedom in a trip down the Mississippi River.

Published in 1884, Huck Finn is considered to be Twain’s masterpiece.
